Welcome to Alligator Pie

Spring – Summer 2008

Alligator Pie offers a gentle and stimulating introduction to life before kindergarten.
Our day home/nursery group is small so your child is assured individualised care and attention. The life of the day home is based on the daily, weekly and seasonal rhythms. The daily rhythm consists of free play, t’ai chi, music, and movement, arts and crafts, gardening, baking, sand play, nature walks and more.
At Alligator Pie we provide a structured environment that is flexible to the needs of all the children.

As young children are vulnerable to the influences in their environment I will strive to be a role model worthy of imitation. I will endeavor to provide your child with examples of gentle encouragement and acts of kindness which in turn lend to values of respect, tolerance and genuine caring.

We trust that you will find our home warm, inviting and brimming with beauty and harmony.

We believe that integral to the healthy development of the child is the need to build a strong foundation of love for the environment and our community.

Working with the earth to create a garden, however small, is an experience that every child should have.
To be able to tend and care for the earth in this way engenders attitudes of stewardship and that premise can be extended to the care of other humans.

For centuries we as care givers have used inanimate objects such as dolls to encourage the ‘idea’ of reciprocating or the ‘gardening’ of affection. We are capable of teaching children how to transfer a learning outcome such as stewardship into the context of caring for other humans. The rewards of this transference goes far beyond the harvest of vegetables, herbs, roots and berries it extends into pro social behaviors that engenders respect for the earth and other humans, sensitivity to impacts (the fragility of eco systems), attendance and perseverance.

We have three gardens:  a Zen garden, an herb garden and a vegetable garden.
Our meditation/Zen garden which is intended to nurture our inner landscapes requires basic maintenance. Our use of the Zen Garden is not limited to our daily tai chi and yoga practices. We plant both an organic herb and vegetable garden to nourish our bodies and the children sense of well being.

Our philosophy is to view our programming as growing responsible leadership ideologies in children and extending it to assist the children into seeing the world beyond our preschools doorstep.
